‘The Jewel Without a Crown’: Inaugural Edition of Elsie Howey Free Press

We are delighted to publish the inaugural edition of Elsie Howey Free Press!

Written by The Dead Letter Office and designed by RAD Liverpool, ‘The Jewel Without a Crown’ takes us to the hollow heart of the Super Library revolution sweeping the UK in the context of Liverpool, whose Central Library was reopened in 2013 after a massive refurbishment costing over £50 million and funded through the Private Finance Initiative.

‘The Jewel Without a Crown’ could not be more timely. Liverpool’s elected mayor Joe Anderson recently announced a programme of searing cuts to public services that would not only significantly deprive adult care, Sure Start Centres and swimming baths but would also increase the death toll of local libraries. A depressingly familiar story that puts the twenty-first century on the back-burner to the Victorians and Edwardians, ‘The Jewel Without a Crown’ argues that the Super Library is ultimately the architectural manifestation of a violent capitalism unconscionably ignorant of the human.
